56K Modems (Juno 5.0) If you have a 56K modem, you might wonder why your connection to Juno is not always at 56000 bps (bits per second). The reason for this is that a connection at 56000 bps is the highest possible transmission speed over an analog telephone line for a 56K modem. Factors such as line noise (static) or conflicting 56K protocols (rules for connection) can dramatically diminish transition speeds, making a connection at 56000 bps very hard to achieve. 56K technology is split among three main protocols (which supports connections from both other protocols). When incompatible modems try to connect with each other, they lower speeds until they find a speed where communication can be established. Make sure that the Juno access number you have selected supports the same protocol as your 56K modem. Protocol information is listed next to each access number in the Juno Access Number Setup and Selection screen.
