How do I check an attachment for viruses?

To check a file attachment for a virus, you will need to first save the file to your computer and then scan the file with antivirus software. Please note that saving a file that contains a virus will not harm your computer. Only opening a file that contains a virus can potentially harm your computer.

Just remember, to prevent your computer from being infected by a virus, you should avoid opening attachments from people you do not know until you scan the file with antivirus software. If you believe your computer may have been infected, please run an antivirus program and then follow the software's advice on how to remove the virus.

To check an attachment for a virus:

  1. In the message list of the Read screen, select the message that contains the attachment you want to save.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the message area, click Show Attachments to display the attachment and double-click the attachment you want to save.
  3. On the File Attachment screen, click Save File.
  4. The Save Attachment screen will appear. Click the Save in arrow to select the folder where you want to save the attachment and click Save.
  5. Follow the instructions of your antivirus software to scan the file you saved for viruses.
  6. If a virus was not detected, or if the antivirus software cleaned the file, you can safely open the attachment.
